Apparel Quality Control: What Every Buyer Should Check

A factory-level quality control checklist for garment orders. Catch defects before they ship β€” not after.

Quality control in apparel isn't just about checking for loose threads. A proper QC process catches issues at four stages of production.

Stage 1: Pre-Production (Fabric & Trim Check)

Before cutting begins, verify:

- **Fabric weight** β€” Use a GSM scale to confirm the fabric matches the spec

- **Color consistency** β€” Check dye lot numbers across all rolls of fabric

- **Shrinkage** β€” Wash test a fabric sample to confirm shrinkage rates

- **Trim verification** β€” Thread, zippers, buttons, labels all match the spec sheet

Stage 2: In-Line Production (During Cutting & Sewing)

While garments are being made:

- **Cutting accuracy** β€” Are pattern pieces aligned with the grain line?

- **Stitch quality** β€” Stitches per inch (SPI): 8-12 for most garments

- **Seam strength** β€” Pull test to check for seam slippage

- **Size grading** β€” Random check that each size matches the measurement spec

Stage 3: Final Random Inspection (AQL)

Before shipment, inspect a random sample using AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit):

| Order Quantity | Sample Size | Critical Defects | Major Defects | Minor Defects |

|----------------|-------------|------------------|---------------|---------------|

| 50-100 | 5 | 0 | 1 | 2 |

| 101-500 | 20 | 0 | 2 | 4 |

| 501-1000 | 32 | 0 | 3 | 5 |

| 1000+ | 80 | 0 | 5 | 7 |

Defect Classification

- **Critical:** Safety hazard, holes, chemical smell β€” zero tolerance

- **Major:** Wrong size, color mismatch, crooked print, broken zipper

- **Minor:** Loose thread, slightly crooked label, 1/4" off in length

Stage 4: Pre-Shipment Check

Final verification before the container is sealed:

- Quantity count vs. packing list

- Carton weight and dimensions

- Label placement and barcode readability

- Poly bag quality and carton condition

How BOAZ Handles QC

Every order goes through these four stages. We provide photos and video at each stage. Third-party inspection firms (SGS, Bureau Veritas) are welcome at the factory at any time.
